That's great - with access to a ROSS I would not even consider spending money on a template. I'd look at ebay and read the user remarks about the templates. Stewmac bits are really high quality bits. You can see through plexi templates which is a plus. A 1/2" template bit takes a smaller initial bite than a 1" long one does, and since stewmac was the first one to sell a bit for template routing, I just got accustomed to using their bits and plastic templates.

I just fix them with plastic wood or epoxy if they get dinged up. I used commercial bodies and rigged up a pin router attachment for my router table to cut them. My tele, strat, and p bass templates are all 1/4 void free plywood. It's pretty much what you feel comfortable with using. I had a machinist buddy make me templates out of aluminum. I've used pine and poplar with great success. Any void free sheet goods can be made into a template with the right tools to process it.
